Time to get serious

I had my 6 week post-op appointment on Monday. Everything looks good...I talked to my Dr. about birth control/future pregnancy. She strongly discouraged trying to get pregnant for at least a year. My pregnancy did quite a job on my body and she said I need time to heal to avoid potential complications in future pregnancies. It's not that I want to get pregnant so soon, but knowing my low ovarian reserve, I just can't see myself preventing pregnancy, you know? She gave me a prescription for the "mini-pill" and told me to start trying again in a year. It's not that I want to get pregnant so soon, but knowing my low ovarian reserve, I just can't see myself preventing pregnancy, you know? But I filled the prescription anyway. When it came time to take the pill this morning, I couldn't do it. I stared at the pills, fiddled with the packaging, and just couldn't take the damn thing. So we're leaving things to chance...knowing that it is highly unlikely that I'll have an "oops" pregnancy (1, I'm breast feeding and 2, I have crappy eggs).

ANYWAY, the point of this post is to mark my return to working out!! After 8 weeks of bed rest and 6 weeks of c-section recovery, my body is mush. Seriously, my belly shakes like a jello mold. It's disgusting. I've lost 45 of the 50 pounds I gained, but I look nasty and flabby and I'm still a good 15 pounds away from my pre-IF weight. So I've got some work to do.

I went on my first jog/trot this evening! It took two tries. I put on an old sports bra and made it about 2 blocks when I looked down in horror. My bo.obs had escaped underneath my sports bra and were hanging out! They were flopping around and you could see my huge ni.pples poking through my shirt. It was NOT pretty, and very embarrassing considering I was running on a major street in Chicago during rush hour. I hung my head and turned around to head back home, taking a deserted side street to avoid the lookers. I got home, lifted up my shirt to show B the massive failure of my first running attempt. He laughed. So did I. At least I can find humor in the sad state of my body.

I found my most supportive nursing bra, and put on my tightest sports bra over it. My bo.obs were now secure enough to try again, although still massive and hurty and porn-star-esque as I ran. I made it about 20 minutes at a sloooooow pace, but it felt so refreshing to be outside and getting some exercise again!

If anyone has any recommendations for good sports bras for huge painful breast feeding bo.obs, please let me know! But this girl is back in business and hopefully will soon have the body to prove it!

  1. I love my bigboob bra. It's from Title Nine and is an Enell http://www.enell.com/

  2. I don't know how it works for breastfeeding yet, but I am in love with my Ta Ta Tamer from Lululemon. Best sports bra for big ones ever!

  3. Ha! That's so damn funny. I can only imagine what passers-by must have been thinking. My husband said that if our IVF works he's getting snipped. He said that it would be our luck that I'd be one of those women who just needed a pregnancy to kick my body into gear. :-) Good luck with the working out. I'm sure it feels great.

  4. That is exactly the kind of thing that would happen to me! Good for you for getting back out. It's nice that with the summer coming you can be outdoors more. You'll definitely get there...don't rush yourself.

  5. Mama and I agree, the TataTamer from Lululemon is the best by far... I wore it through my whole pregnancy. Go get one stat! :)

  6. I am amazed you tried running with big breastfeeding boobs. My hurt so much with the slightest jostle, I can't imagine running with them! Please post about what bra you find that works, because my fat tush needs to get moving again too!

  7. That sounds embarrassing and painful, but also hilarious! The commuters of Chicago were given quite a show.

I don't think I could bring myself to take birth control, either. LG and I have discussed things, and if this pregnancy works out, we're not going to prevent afterward. If fate gives us a miracle, we'll take it, and if not, we'll be ready to go back to the RE.

  8. Wow, first of all, congrats on losing 45 lbs already! THAT is awesome! And the vision of you running with the girls flapping around is very amusing!! Haha. Good for you for trying though! I'll tell you, the one thing that really helped me slim down was actually yoga. I have the Body by Bethenny DVD, and it's great! But nothing beats fresh spring air, I know!

  9. This sounds like something that would happen to me too. :) Let us know if you find a good bra for breastfeeding boobs. I've been wondering the same thing too!

  10. Well, that image gave me a good laugh!! :)

Good luck with the sports bra. I need a good recommendation, too.

  11. This made me laugh out loud! How funny! I could totally see that happening to me. Looks like a lot of people recommended the Lululemon bra--I'll have to check that out.

Good luck find a sports bra and getting back in shape!

  14. I totally understand the no birth control thing! After my son was born, we didn't use anything. I trusted my instinct and we never had an "oops" baby. I would have loved too have had one, but it is not in the cards for us!

Also, before you run or workout, pump or nurse beforehand. It will help with the painful bouncing boobs during your run!

    You go girl!

  15. I see lots of other people recommended it, but the Tata tamer from Lululemon is amazing. I have several (buy one for now, buy another in 3 months when your rib cage is fully back to old size) and I wear them OVER a nursing bra when I run. That way when I get back from my run I take off the tata tamer right away and let my boobs breathe a bit. I wore it while breastfeeding my first, through my second pregnancy, and then again now breastfeeding my 2nd (my kids are 15 months apart).

As for the mini pill thing - I too had a csection with my first, and was told to wait at least 9 months between pregnancies. Given that I had issues I didn't want to mess with my cycles by getting on the pill, so we used natural family planning until 5 months and then just left it to chance. I stopped breastfeeding at 6 months due to issues with my son's health and lo and behold was pregnant within weeks (never having had a period). I had a VBAC with my second and the doctors said that 6 months between was just fine, after all. Now I'm on the non-hormonal IUD because I don't want another just yet but I also want to avoid hormones til I'm sure I'm done with having kids.

    Hope this helps!
    Nancy

  16. I'm so very impressed you're back out running - floppy tatas and all!!! I know you'll be back in shape in no time!

I can't imagine trying to prevent pregnancy... Weird!

  17. Ahh, the birth control post-infertility question. Man, I don't know if I would take it either. I honestly believe we'd leave it up to chance but the husband is SO sensible and practical I don't know if he'd be ok with that. Maybe it's a don't ask, don't tell sorta situation? ;)

And you are TOO funny about the sports bra and boob issue. Hilarious! But how awesome that you're back out and moving. Must be such a great feeling after that bed rest and 6-weeks post-C-section!! Kudos to you for getting out there!

  18. Wow! Congrats to you for getting back out there!! And 20 minutes is a fabulous start - every little bit counts and I am sure that the time to YOURSELF is sooo nice!!

I have been thinking and wondering about post-pregnancy birth control. I feel like we will be inclined to "take our chances," knowing that I went a good 7 months without a period when I first went off the pill, but it's hard to know for sure. I guess IF makes the thought of an "ooops" pregnancy not so bad.

  19. Welcome back to exercise land! Feels great being back huh!?!

  20. I had my 6 week visit yesterday and was cleared for everything... I debated going for a run but I wasn't sure how my disgusting boobs would handle it. Glad to hear you got out there. Maybe I'll give it a whirl.

  21. Just another word of caution about the mini-pill: it completely zapped my milk supply, and I've heard of others say the same thing (even though a lot of doctors say it will not).

Glad you got out exercising again!

  22. I'm with you on the birth control - err, lack thereof. They gave me a packet yesterday and told me it's time to start thinking about birth control now, ummm, yea, not doing it. i'll take the chance on getting pregnant too quickly.

Awesome that you're out and exercising again (is it bad that I'm a bit jealous?), it's got to feel great. Hopefully with the right boob support you'll be back in shape in no time!

  23. I had the VERY SAME THING happen to me when I went on my first postpartum run--the boobs came out the bottom of the bra. I didn't even know that was possible!! (And now I'm secretly glad to hear it happened to someone besides me!) And, ha, I also showed my husband what happened--and we had a good laugh about it. After that fiasco, I had great luck with the Fiona sports bra by Moving Comfort. The band and straps are fully adjustable, and you buy the bra in an actual bra size (band and cup), so the fit is excellent. Until now, I hadn't heard of the Ta Ta Tamer other commenters are talking about, but that one also looks awesome, and I'll definitely keep it in mind if I have a next time. :o)

Oh, and I'd like to reiterate another commenter's advice about getting one new, good sports bra now and then holding off on more purchases for a few months when your bra size has stabilized a bit more. Otherwise, you'll have a bunch of nice bras that won't fit after a few months.

  24. Yip on getting back out there.....how awesome do those sore, achey quads feel post-trot, right?!?!

I'm totally with you on not taking the BCPs. We'll use other methods to prevent pregnancy, but (personally!) I have ZERO interest in putting those hormones in my body, they either masked my anovulation or caused it....no thank you. xoxo

  25. I do the nursing bra/tight sports bra combo too. The good news is that my boobs are way less porn star these days. And they don't leak so much. Hopefully yours will stay in whatever bra you decide to use (cause funny as that story was, I'm sure you don't want a repeat!).

While it seems sort of unnecessary, we're using condoms these days. I'm not comfortable going back on any kind of birth control pill right now and while I really want another pregnancy, I'm just now quite ready. A baby who never wants to sleep is also a reliable method of birth control. But I know what you mean about the low ovarian reserve. Soon...
